Imparfait vs Passé Composé

The pair that decides whether French past speech sounds native. Both are "past tense" in English, so the choice is invisible to a translator — you pick by function, not by the English verb.

Concept Map — Imparfait vs Passé Composé

The pair that decides whether French past speech sounds native. Both are
"past tense" in English, so the choice is invisible to a translator — you pick
by function, not by the English verb.

Anchor

French splits the past into two jobs. Passé composé moves the story forward:
single, completed events ("and then this happened"). Imparfait holds the
scene still: background, description, habits, and feelings that were simply
going on. Most past narration alternates between them in the same paragraph —
PC for the beads, imparfait for the string.

Prerequisites

Control these before drilling the contrast:

  • [[Passe-Compose-Formation]] (create)avoir/être + past participle; which verbs take être.
  • [[Etre-Verbs-Agreement]] (create) — gender/number agreement on être verbs. Already a logged weak point: je suis allée, je suis restée, je me suis levée (see Control Center → Current Weak Points).
  • [[Imparfait-Formation]] (create)nous present stem − -ons + endings -ais/-ais/-ait/-ions/-iez/-aient. Only irregular stem: être → ét-.

The Contrast

Pick by the function in the story, not the English word.

Cue / Function Passé Composé (event) Imparfait (frame)
A single completed action J'ai mangé à 8h.
A sequence "and then… and then…" Je suis entrée, j'ai vu Paul, on a parlé.
Something that interrupts Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné. Je dormais quand…
Background / setting the scene Il faisait nuit, il pleuvait.
Ongoing action ("was -ing") Je regardais un film.
Habit / repeated past ("used to / would") Quand j'étais petite, je jouais dehors.
Description, feelings, age, weather, time Elle était fatiguée. J'avais 20 ans.
A state with a clear start/end or duration J'ai vécu 3 ans à Sydney. (closed) J'habitais à Sydney. (just context)

Same verb, different meaning by tense — high-value pairs:

Verb Passé composé Imparfait
savoir J'ai su = I found out Je savais = I knew
pouvoir J'ai pu = I managed to Je pouvais = I was able / could
vouloir J'ai voulu = I decided to / tried Je voulais = I wanted
connaître J'ai connu = I met (first time) Je connaissais = I knew (was familiar)
devoir J'ai dû = I had to (and did) Je devais = I was supposed to

Companion Language Points

Learn these in the same sessions — they're what make the choice automatic:

  • [[Past-Time-Markers]] (create) — the words that flag each tense:
    • Passé composé: soudain, tout à coup, un jour, hier, ce matin-là, puis, ensuite, enfin.
    • Imparfait: tous les jours, souvent, toujours, d'habitude, pendant que, à l'époque, quand j'étais….
  • [[Plus-Que-Parfait]] (create) — "had done"; the step before a passé composé event (J'avais déjà mangé quand il est arrivé.). The natural next dot.
  • être en train de + infinitif — emphasises the ongoing action the imparfait already implies (flagged "ahead-of-curriculum" in [[french-learning-crossref]]).

Fixed Expressions

Memorize whole — they hard-wire the right tense:

French Use
Il était une fois… "Once upon a time" — storytelling opener (always imparfait).
Quand j'étais petit·e, … "When I was little…" — habit frame.
C'était + adjectif (c'était génial / nul / incroyable) reacting to a past experience.
Il y avait… "there was/were" (scene-setting) vs il y a eu = "there occurred".
Comme d'habitude, … "as usual" — triggers imparfait.
Tout à coup, … "all of a sudden" — triggers passé composé.

What Completes It / Study Next

  • [[Plus-Que-Parfait]] (create) — completes the past system: background (imparfait) ▸ earlier event (plus-que-parfait) ▸ main event (passé composé).
  • [[Conditionnel-Passe]] (create)si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé (regret/hypothetical); already met passively in the Iran vlog ([[french-learning-crossref]]).
  • Drill direction: once the contrast feels automatic, tell a whole past story (a trip, a bad day) and watch the alternation.

Production Drill

Scene: Tell the story of a memorable meal or a trip — out loud, 6–8 sentences.

Force yourself to use, in one telling:

  • at least 3 passé composé events (what happened, in order);
  • at least 3 imparfait frames (weather, mood, setting, what was going on);
  • one quand … + interruption sentence (imparfait + PC together);
  • one correct être-verb agreement (je suis allée / arrivée / restée).

Then check against the contrast table and log any broken sentence as a weak point.
