I can make a medical appointment, describe symptoms and where it hurts, say how
long it's lasted, take the doctor's advice, and then buy medicine at the
pharmacy — both on and off prescription.

avoir mal à + the right article — the trap 🔑

mal à contracts with the article exactly like any à + le/les. Pick by the
body part's gender/number — this is the logged weak point:

devoir vs il faut — both "must," different reach

• Vous **devez** boire de l'eau. → obligation aimed at you specifically.
• **Il faut** boire de l'eau. → impersonal, true for anyone.
• **Il ne faut pas** travailler si tu es malade. → prohibition ("you mustn't").
