The single hardest thing in French food shopping isn't the vocabulary — it's
the article. "Bread" is le pain, du pain, un pain, or un kilo de pain depending on what you mean. Master that and a market run becomes easy.

Can-Do Goal

I can shop for groceries at an open-air market and a supermarket: greet the
vendor, ask what's fresh, ask the price, buy by quantity, find a section, deal
with an out-of-stock item, and pay.

Extended Dialogue — Au marché (At the open-air market)

A Saturday-morning stall. V = le marchand (vendor), M = Miranda.

The Grammar That Powers It

The article system — the real confusion 🔑

This is the weak point worth drilling. Same noun, four articles, four meanings:

➡️ And in the negative, every partitive/indefinite collapses to de / d':

Asking the Price — the ways that matter

French	Use
C'est combien ?	"How much is it?" — pointing at one item
Combien coûtent les fraises ?	"How much are the strawberries?" — named item
Ça fait combien ?	"How much is that (total)?" — at the end
C'est trop cher. / Vous avez moins cher ?	"Too expensive / anything cheaper?"

Production Drill

Scene: You go to the Saturday market for fruit, then to the supermarket for
bread and eggs. The market is cash-only; one item is sold out.

Produce, out loud, in one run:

• a greeting + one partitive request (Je voudrais du / de la / des …);
• one price question (C'est combien ? / Combien coûtent … ?);
• one measured quantity with bare de (un kilo de …, une barquette de …);
• one availability question and a pas de reply (Vous avez … ? — Non, il n'y a pas de …);
• one direction question at the supermarket (Où sont … ? / C'est par où … ?);
• one en answer to avoid repeating the noun (J'en prends deux.);
• a closing (Ce sera tout, merci. Ça fait combien ?).
